Send patch edits, knobs and notes to the FM-1.

Follow the FM-1

Its keys, knobs and buttons play this page, whatever firmware it runs (only what that firmware sends over MIDI).

MIDI keyboard MIDI clock out

Clock at Main’s tempo, and Start / Stop with Play (Space): several FM-1s play in time. An FM-1 follows it with CLOCK IN on (GLO, K2; on unless you switched it off). The clock stops when this page closes.

Ctrl/Cmd-click a rowin an expanded assembly: show it on the collapsed card, or take it off (while choosing or arranging the card it selects the row instead)

Choosing and arranging a card

click a rowchoosing (the frame’s card · N): show it on the collapsed card or take it off. The check box on a member’s title does all its parameters (any off: all on, else all off); select all / select none in the frame’s bar do every parameter. Jacks stay one click each

touch screena long press on a row starts a selection, taps add or remove rows, dragging a selected row moves them all (arranging), the button in the bar shows, hides or takes them off; a tap on the empty canvas ends it

Controls

←→ ↑↓with nothing selected: the previous / next device on Main’s knobs, and its previous / next page, round within the device
hold 1–4 + wheelturn knob K1–K4 of that page
a Steps card’s rollthe piano roll under the canvas, as in Ableton: click a note to select it (Shift adds), drag to move (Option: a copy), its edges for length / start, Cmd-drag for velocity; drag a band on the empty grid; double-click adds or removes a note, right-click removes; Delete, arrows (Shift+↑↓ an octave, Shift+←→ length), Cmd+A C X V D, B draw mode, Fold; drag the ruler for the length; the wheel scrolls the pitches, a key on its side plays; Esc closes
arm on a cardMain’s keys play that device, cable or not: any card that takes keys (an engine, a Steps track, a Drum map); several at once make a layer. While anything is armed only armed devices hear Main; again: disarm
‹ preset › on an assemblyits presets (stored values of its card rows, shared by every copy of the same assembly): the arrows step, the name opens the list; a star: changed since. Its ⋯ menu: Store as a preset…
a Steps card’s rec, Shift+Rrecord on the armed track. Stopped: a note or a chord (the keys held when the first is let go) fills the cursor’s step; Backspace a rest, Enter a tie, ←→ move, Esc stops. Running: play along, notes land on the nearest step, each pass overdubs and is one undo step
Ctrl/Cmd-click a steptie it to the note before (it holds on through the step)
[ ], a Steps card’s ‹ P01 ›the patch’s pattern (1..64): every track’s card and roll show and edit their pattern of that number (one a track has not got shows its first, and an edit makes it). While playing, each track takes it at the end of its pass (the strip blinks P01 → P02 until then). The strip also sets this pattern’s own length and rate, copies every track’s pattern to the next empty one (Alt-click: to a number), clears this track’s pattern; song opens the songs
song on the stripsongs 1..8: entries of a pattern and a shift (−12..+12 semitones; tracks that play a Drum map are never shifted), + inserts a copy, × deletes, drag to reorder, + entry adds one. pattern / song n say what the patch plays; each track plays an entry per pass, then the first again
hoverthe status line under the keyboard says what it is and what it does; the FM-1 budget is at its right
touch screenpinch to zoom the canvas, two fingers to pan it, anywhere on it; one finger pans the empty canvas or a card’s body and works a control as a mouse would. Swipe the dock sideways for the rest of Main (from a knob or a button too); drag a knob up and down to turn it
drag a sliderset its value; press anywhere on the bar to jump there
Shift-dragfine: a slider at a tenth of the speed, a knob or envelope corner finer too
double-clicka knob, wheel or envelope display: back to its default; a heading or assembly title: rename it
click a rowits device page goes on Main’s knobs K1..K4 (dotted lines and numbered badges show which knob turns which row); DEVICE / PAGE in the dock step through them, as SELECT / ALGO do on the FM-1. MIDI CC 16..19 turn them too
double-click a value bartype a value (2k, 440 Hz, 120 ms, 50 %, a choice by name); Enter sets, Tab sets and moves on, Esc cancels

On the FM-1

HOMEback one step (out of the SEQ page, out of the menu); on the device pages with nothing to go back to it does nothing. Held: the settings menu
ALGO / SELECTALGO moves sideways (a device’s pages, the menu’s tabs), SELECT picks (the device, a menu row)
ENVthe environment: every device from Main to the Output, each Steps track followed by what it plays. SELECT the row, K1..K4 its first page, PRESET or ALGO its presets, SEL arms or disarms it (several at once: a layer or a split); ENV or HOME goes back. ENV held + SAVE: the device’s preset
SELarms the device on screen, so the keys play it, and disarms the others; on an environment row it adds the row to the armed devices or takes it out. A device with no keys input says NOTHING HERE TAKES KEYS and changes nothing. On the SEQ page a tap opens the SONG page
KEYS WIREDnothing armed: Main’s cables decide what the keys play. A patch loads this way, and the footer says KEYS WIRED after its name. Taking the last device out in the environment leaves the keys wired. The SEQ page arms the track it shows (opening it, or ALGO there)
RECthe same on every page, and it never changes the page. Stopped: the transport starts and recording begins. Running: recording begins. Again: recording stops, the transport goes on. PLAY stops both. What records is the armed Steps tracks, over the notes already there (a track armed while REC is on records from then on); with none armed the bar says REC: NO TRACK ARMED. REC held + a black key adds track n to the armed devices or takes it out
keys on drumswhile the keys reach a Drum map (its track armed, or cabled from Main with nothing armed) black keys 1..8 play its rows 1..8 on every page, the white keys nothing; MIDI out sends the row’s note (white keys nothing), MIDI notes coming in still play the row of their note
SEQ on a drum trackan 8 × 16 grid of the map’s rows: a black key sounds its row while held and picks it, REC on or off, running or stopped; while REC records, it also records the hit into the nearest step. SELECT picks the row silently, white keys switch its hit on a step (FX held: accent, also while REC records), OCT− / OCT+ the next 16 steps
SEQ on a melodic tracka piano roll: 8 pitches × 16 steps, C rows tinted, opened around the track’s notes; SELECT moves the row and scrolls at the edges, black keys 1..8 pick the 8 rows shown (black key 1 the bottom one; stopped: heard), ALGO the track, white keys switch the selected pitch on a step, OCT− / OCT+ the next 16 steps. FX held + a white key: an accent. SEL held + a key: the row jumps to that key’s pitch and it sounds (FX + OCT: the octave). A small triangle over or under a step: notes above or below the 8 rows shown. LFO held + a white key: tie the note through that step (again: untie). A held step + K1 its pitch, + K2 velocity, + K3 chance (SELECT still moves the row). The page arms the track it shows. While REC records, all 27 keys play the track and record their own pitch into the nearest step (OCT− / OCT+ the octave)
SEQ held + RECon the SEQ page: clear the selected track (all its hits or notes). The bar asks first; REC again within 3 s, SEQ still held, clears it; another key or button, a knob, or letting go of SEQ leaves it as it was. The editor follows (with Live on, one undo step)
GLOThe FM-1’s own quick page on K1..K4: MIDI channel, MIDI clock in, MIDI out, LEDs (saved with SAVE); its footer lists what each patch button does. The patch’s tempo and morph are on Main’s device page. GLO again goes back.
a Page buttona press: the next page of its list; held: its first page while it is down. ALGO steps the list, SELECT leaves it
PRESETsteps through the patches (on the SEQ and SONG pages: the patch’s pattern); PLAY held + PRESET: the tempo
PRESET on the SEQ pagethe patch’s pattern, 1..64: running, each track takes it at the end of its pass (the bar shows P03>P04 until then); stopped, at once. A track without that pattern plays its first
SEL tapped on the SEQ pagethe SONG page: one row per entry (pattern and shift). SELECT the row, K1 its pattern (on END: a new entry; FX held: a copy inserted before it), K2 its shift (−12..+12, never on a drum track), K4 right the song plays, left the pattern again, ALGO song 1..8, SEQ held + REC deletes the entry (REC again within 3 s), SEL or HOME back
SAVEthe patch into its slot, with the panel settings; in the menu it also closes it
